“May it be the beginning of a revolution”, says mother of girl killed in attacks in ES

The mother of student Selena Sagrillo, one of the victims of the attack on schools in Aracruz, Espírito Santo, published a letter in which she regrets and reports the mourning for the loss of her daughter who had turned 12.

In the letter, the mother, Thais Fanttini Sagrillo Zuccolotto, asks for love, pity and safety for children. “I plead for pity and for safety for our children to be the millions of little revolutions they could be,” the text reads.

She also regrets her daughter’s dreams that were interrupted by the attack and says she hopes that her daughter’s death is “the beginning of a new revolution”🇧🇷

“May Selena’s departure be the beginning of a new revolution, just as she liked it, but one based on love and safety for our children of all ethnicities, regionalities, social classes and beliefs.”

Selena was one of the four victims confirmed in the attacks that took place on Friday (25), when a young man with a wire gun fired at teachers and children at Primo Bitti and Centro Educacional Praia de Coqueiral (CEPC) schools, both in the Coqueiral neighborhood.

On Saturday (26), the Civil Police of Espírito Santo (PCES) reported that the 16-year-old teenager, apprehended in Aracruz, will be liable for an offense similar to the crimes of 10 attempted murders and three murders, all with the impossibility of victim’s defence.

I am writing this text from my daughter Selena’s computer and bedroom, which are now bitterly absent. I write because I no longer have a voice to speak, I have no more tears to cry.

The regret, pain and anguish that were in my chest before now begin to give way to a feeling of understanding, acceptance and longing. Sitting in the middle of the little creative chaos that was her room, I found a text that spoke so deeply to my heart that I can’t help but share it with you, who are giving us so much strength right now. The text said:

“There will come a day when the whole world will be on your side, and that day is today. I’ve waited my whole life. And everything is fine. I turned 11 and had returned to the neighborhood and the school where I grew up after two years in São Mateus (ES), and I said: One day the whole world will be on your side, and that day is close.”

Indeed the day was at hand for my daughter. There was 1 month and five days since she had completed 12 years. The day of her death, 25/11, was also the birthday of my father, and his grandfather José. 12/01 will be the birthday of his other grandfather, Laudérico. In thirty days it will be Christmas. My daughter will not see the next world cup games and she will never again be excited by a goal like the one by Richarlyson, which she found “amazing”.

I’ll never see what she would be capable of. She was becoming a powerful woman, free soul, feminine. The promise of a lifetime was broken. A whole interrupted future. At the cost of hatred, lack of love, terror. I don’t come here to cry out for retaliation, because of hate, I’m fed up.

I cry out for pity and for safety for our children to be the millions of little revolutions they could be. Safety in schools, streets, homes. Sheltered and protected from all the banishments of the world. Away from violence, drugs, weapons and abuse.

May Selena’s departure be the beginning of a new revolution, just as she liked it, but one based on love and safety for our children of all ethnicities, regionalities, social classes and creeds.

This is a lament and a cry from a mother who suffers from the loss of a daughter. I ask that you send us prayers, love, good energies, whatever her beliefs are. May the world unite for Selena, as she wrote in her text, and for so many other Selenas around the world.
