One of the season’s appointments has just seen the light of day at Villa Aurelia in Rome: the McKim Medal Galathe recognition that every year rewards a personality who has achieved excellence in their field.
The proceeds from the event support the scholarships of the Academy Academy in Rome and in past years the recognition has been attributed to personalities of the caliber of Luca Guadagnino, Paola Antonelli, Roberto Benigni, Sir Antonio Pappano, Paolo Sorrentino, Carlo Petrini, Zaha Hadid, Renzo Piano, Cy Twombly, Umberto Eco, Franco Zeffirelli, Ennio Morricone, Miuccia Prada, Luigi Ontani, Riccardo Muti and Bernardo Bertolucci.
The medal, designed by the artist Cy Twombly and created by BVLGARI, this year it is attributed to the starred chef Massimo Botturaa real star of Italian cuisine and standard-bearer in the world.
Bottura, owner of Osteria Francescana, a three-Michelin-star restaurant in the historic center of Modena, has been awarded twice as the best restaurant in the world by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. His Gucci Osteria in Los Angeles, on Rodeo Drive, is loved by celebrities. With his wife Lara Gilmore he founded the Foundation The Tortellantesocial project and therapeutic laboratory that takes care of people on the autism spectrum by teaching them homemade pasta with local grandmothers.
The motivation for the victory is explained by the president Margherita Marenghi Vaselli: «For the American Academy in Rome it is an honor to award the McKim Medal to Chef Massimo Bottura for his contribution to gastronomic culture and the pursuit of sustainability. A Chef who is a symbol of Italian creativity in the world, who through continuous research best expresses the potential of food and the importance of not wasting our resources».
The noble guests of the sixteenth edition – from Alessandro Preziosi to Isabella Ferrari – toasted the Chef’s victory, in a breathtaking setting, a hymn to Made in Italy in all its nuances.
