According to the president of the Gerontology Department of the Brazilian Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology, Diego Félix Miguel, there are biological aspects that can influence the desire for sex among older people, such as hormonal issues, diseases and the use of medications, but when a sexual routine is lived, it is an important part of a healthy life.
“Sexuality at this stage of life does not cease to exist and brings health benefits. It provides physical, mental and social well-being, and should be part of the aging process in an active and healthy way. Giving visibility to the sexuality of elderly people contributes to demystifying the subject”, says the specialist.
The professional also advises seeking medical support, which can open a dialogue on the subject and carry out tests to identify how to recover sexuality.
“On the social side, it is important for older adults to participate in spaces that encourage them to interact with other people, such as clubs, gyms and dances. And by creating space for dialogue, the doctor or health professional can provide an environment of respect, education and support, helping to combat stigmas and improve the general well-being of older adults.”
