UN Security Council
The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting after Russian troops seized control of Europe’s biggest nuclear plant in southern Ukraine. The Russian offensive caused a fire in the area of the plant, but the reactors were not affected and there are no signs of radiation.
NATO Positioning
The NATO Secretary General said the military alliance is not part of the war and will not move troops. Jens Stoltenberg said that NATO is a “defensive alliance” and that Western countries need to ensure that the conflict does not go beyond Ukraine.
Press freedom in Russia
Democracy observatory data show that press freedom has worsened in Russia since President Vladimir Putin took over the country in 1999. Cases of harassment against journalists and censorship of media and internet vehicles have grown significantly.
Ordering supplies to Brazil
Ukraine asked Brazil for medical supplies. The list includes breathing apparatus for adults and children and vital signs monitors. The request was sent by the Itamaraty Palace to the Ministry of Health.
Brazil’s GDP
Brazil’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was below the global average, with growth of 5.5%. Between 2019 and 2021, the country dropped four positions in the ranking of the 15 largest economies in the world, and now occupies the thirteenth place. The survey was carried out by the risk rating agency Austin Rating.
