A contract for the construction of LNG carrier ships was finally signed by Maran Gas of the Angelikoussi group with a South Korean yard, confirming its strategic expansion in natural gas.
In particular, as it became known from the shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. (DSME), Maran has ordered two LNG carriers, with a capacity of 174,000 cubic meters each, the delivery of which will be completed by November 2024.
The deal, which includes options for two more ships of the same specification, is valued at a total of $ 410.9 million. The cost of building LNG carriers has “skyrocketed” this year and the companies that invest in it estimate that there will be amortization immediately, due to the many ongoing projects.
Maran’s new order comes after two strategic moves it recently implemented, with an emphasis on LNG. Initially, the group’s management team was strengthened with Sveinung JS Støhle, who has over 25 years of experience in LNG shipping and the wider energy field.
At the same time, a memorandum was signed with a South Korean bank to finance shipbuilding in the country’s yards. According to the Koreans, the focus will be on ships with dual fuel technologies, capable of burning LNG or ammonia, which produce less pollutants. So, it seems that this strategic cooperation is bearing fruit.
In total, Maran Gas manages a fleet of 42 LNG carriers, while it has six more steamers under construction. Most of them travel under the Greek flag.
