The singer Megan Thee Stallion stars in an updated version of an iconic Pepsi commercial inspired by the film “Gladiator” . If in the original version Beyoncé , Pink and Britney Spears shone as gladiators, now the voice of “WAP” and “Sweetest Pie” reverses roles, becomes emperor of Rome and appears commanding the arena at the Colosseum.
The gladiators this time are some of the biggest stars in the NFL, the American football league, such as Travis Kelce, a player for the current champion (Kansas City Chiefs) and boyfriend of singer Taylor Swift. Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills), Derrick Henry (Baltimore Ravens) and Justin Jefferson (Minnesota Vikings) are also in the commercial.
Another change was in the soundtrack that accompanies the commercial. In the original version, the trio composed of the voices of “Crazy In Love”, “(You Drive Me) Crazy” and “So What” sang a version of “We Will Rock You”, by Queen. This time, Megan raps in her own style that replaces the verses and adds to the chorus of the hit by the band led by Freddie Mercury.
The Britney, Pink and Beyoncé commercial was aired in 2004 and was inspired by the film “Gladiator” by Ridley Scott, released in 2000. This time, the advertising campaign came out on the eve of the release of the sequel which, like the video that inserts the soft drink brand and the NFL into the film’s universe, will also be directed by Scott.
On her Instagram, Megan Thee Stallion shared a snippet of the commercial and joked that she now feels truly famous.
“We are officially famous, we landed a Pepsi commercial,” the rapper wrote.
“Gladiator 2” hits Brazilian theaters on November 14th and will star Paul Mescal. Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen, and Joseph Quinn are also in the cast.
