The actor Mel Gibson 69, revealed that his Malibu home was destroyed by the Los Angeles wildfires while he was recording a podcast with Joe Rogen in Austin, Texas. The Oscar-winning actor and director shared the news during a phone interview with NewsNation’s “Elizabeth Vargas Reports.”
“Obviously, It’s kind of devastating. It’s emotional “, he said. “You live there a long time and you had all your stuff. Do you remember the [comediante] George Carlin talking about his stuff? I had my things there, and now I have been relieved of the burden of my things because everything is in ashes.”
Gibson said he was “uneasy” during the podcast with Rogen because he knew his neighborhood was on fire. “When I returned home, as expected, [a casa] it wasn’t there anymore,” he told Vargas. “I came home and said to myself, ‘Well, at least I don’t have those annoying plumbing problems anymore.’”
He said he and his girlfriend had left, but she remained in California while he went to Texas to do the podcast. “I’ve never seen a place so massively burned,” Gibson said of his destroyed home. “You could put it in an urn.”
Other celebrities, including Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Billy Crystal, Jeff Bridges, Paris Hilton and Ricki Lake, also spoke out about losing their homes. Moore shared an update on Instagram on Thursday, writing that she was able to visit her Altadena home and “witness all of this loss,” including three photos of what was left of her residence.
“Miraculously, the main part of our house is still standing. For now. It is not habitable, but is mostly intact,” Moore wrote. She added that they lost their garage and back house to the fire.
In a statement to CNN on Wednesday, Crystal said, “Words cannot describe the enormity of the devastation we are witnessing and experiencing. We grieve for our friends and neighbors who also lost their homes and businesses in this tragedy.”
“Janice and I have lived in our home since 1979. We raised our children and grandchildren here. Every inch of our home was filled with love. Beautiful memories that cannot be taken away,” he added. “We are heartbroken, of course, but with the love of our children and friends we will get through this. We pray for the safety of firefighters and first responders. Pacific Palisades is a resilient community of incredible people and we know that in time it will rise again. It’s our home.”
The family beach house belonging to Oscar-winning actor Bridges was also destroyed by fire. He and his loved ones are safe, according to his representative.
Actress and former presenter Lake shared on her Instagram page on Wednesday that she lost her “dream home” in the fires, writing: “Everything is lost.”
“It was our paradise on Earth. The place where we planned to grow old together. We never take our heavenly spot on the cliff overlooking our beloved Malibu for granted, not for a second,” she wrote. Lake added that she is mourning the “immeasurable” loss of her home, where she and her husband were married three years ago.
