Born as Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson, the 64 years old movie star/ director is one of the wealthiest Hollywood faces around. He earned his mammoth net worth of $425 million as of 2020 by being an exceptionally versatile actor and an award-winning director.

He owns several real estate buildings throughout the country and fathers nine children in total.

Early life and beginning of Gibson’s career

Gibson was born 6th of 9 children in 1956. He was born in Peekskill, New York, his family moved to Australia when he was 12 because of financial issues, where he grew up and was educated by Christian brothers.

Gibson attended Sydney’s National Institute of Dramatic Art and worked on stage before his debut in Australia.

Before moving to Sydney, Australia, his father was awarded $145,000 in a lawsuit against the New York central railroad for a work-related injury.

An early start and career’s beginnings

Gibson first appeared in Mad Max and was compensated with $15,000 for his role. After this, he played the role of a mentally challenged youth in Tim; he kept on appearing in various Australian TV shows and budget films during this time.

In 1981, he appeared in a World War 1 movie, Gallipoli, which jumpstarted his career and put Gibson on the map. He was praised for his role and even earned the Best Actor award at the Australian Film Institute.

The next year, the release of Attack Force Z, a world war two movie, and Mad Max 2 made an even more significant impact on Gibson’s career. He has also praised for his subliminal role in a romantic thriller released the same year called The Year of Living Dangerously.

After all the praise and recognition, Gibson took a year-long hiatus after his twin sons’ birth in 1983. He returned to the big screen in 1984 with another film, The Bounty, which wasn’t a hit at the box office.

However, this slump didn’t let Gibson lose his momentum as he was paid $1 million for the reprisal of his role in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1985.

Gibson’s legendary Hollywood venture

Gibson made his American debut in 1984 with the drama The River. The same year he starred in a romantic film by an Australian director Gillian Armstrong, named Mrs. Soffel. After working with Australian filmmakers for four ongoing projects, Gibson made way and played the role of Martin Riggs in the film Lethal Weapon in 1988, which earned him the title of Hollywood’s leading man.

Next, he starred in three films back to back in the year 1990. Bird on a Wire, Air America, and Hamlet went out with big expectations and didn’t disappoint the audience at all. Gibson reprised Hamlet’s role with pure perfection while being the producer of the film, which came under his newly formed agency, Icon Productions.

In 2000, Gibson was paid a record $25 million to appear in the film The Patriot. The movie earned over $100 million on the box office and his two other films that year, Chicken Run and What Women Want.

Two years later, in 2002, his Vietnam War drama We Were Soldiers became Gibson’s one of the highest-grossing films of his career. He also starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s movie Signs, which was also released the same year, earning extraordinarily at the box office.

After that, his career hit a slump before he rose to the stars again in 2010 with his role in Edge of Darkness. However, the same year, a scandal broke out with his girlfriend, which caused the talent agency William Morris Endeavors to drop him.

He made his production debut with hamlet in 1989 by his own company, Icon Production. The company soon began investing in short budget films, which didn’t significantly impact Hollywood grounds but helped the company build a reputation.

In 2004, Gibson directed the film The Passion of the Christ, which was laden with controversies. The R-rated movie lacked investments, and therefore, Gibson invested about $45 million of his own money. In 1985 he produced, directed, and starred in the film Braveheart. The film earned him a golden globe for best director. The film also won him two Academy Awards for the Best Director and Best Motion Picture. The film focused on William Wallace as he led the Scots to the First War of Independence against the King, Edward the first of England.

Personal life

Gibson married Robyn Denise Moore on seven June 1980 after dating for a few years. The couple stayed married for over two decades before ending up in a divorce in 2009. The couple has seven children together, one daughter and six sons. Moore was a dental nurse and Gibson, an unnamed artist when they began dating.

After their divorce, Gibson paid one of the highest divorce settlements in the history of Hollywood. He spent over $400 million to Moore. The couple didn’t have a prenuptial agreement, and by California law being community property state, Robyn should have gotten half of all that Gibson earned while they were married.

Gibson then started dating an Italian pianist Grigorieva and after half a decade together, in 2010, Grigorieva filed a lawsuit against Gibson, accusing him of domestic violence. Gibson’s Ex-Wife Robyn Moore came to the defense, claiming that she had never been abused in their relationship. A settlement of $750,000 was made in Grigorieva’s favor and joint legal custody of their daughter and a house in California.

Gibson made waves as he entered Hollywood, and with his ingenious business mindedness, he was able to keep his fortune and make it bigger with time. He kept making endeavors towards what he felt was a right move and eventually, made it big.
