Mercadona will invest 140 million until 2025 to reduce plastic and use recycled material

 

The Mercadona company opened this Wednesday on its surface of the Avenida del Mar in Castellan the first store 6.25 that will develop Strategy 6.25, which means meeting -through six sustainability actions- a triple objective to contribute to the best conservation of the planet, from now until 2025. During this month of October, the food company will open at least one 6.25 store in each province of Spain and in Portugal.

Currently, the company is multiplying its efforts and acquiring new commitments to reduce the use of plastics and prevent your waste from becoming waste. Strategy 6.25 is based on this, as a  company committed to the environment that assumes the challenges and concerns of societyÂ, the communication department explained this Wednesday to EL MUNDO.

The business on Avenida del Mar is the first in the province, where Another from the town of Vila-real will be added during the next week.

Company sources explain that  «the commitment to the principles of economía circular and the efficient use of natural resources is everyone’s responsibility.  If we do not take care of the Planet we put our business project at risk.

This bet translates into a planned investment of 140 million euros -40 million in 2020- until 2025. Sustainable logistics, energy efficiency, responsible waste management, sustainable production and reduction of plastic, are measures that will be carried out to achieve this triple objective in the next five years: Reduce 25% of the plastic stico; make all plastic packaging recyclable; and recycle all your plastic waste.

Throughout 2020, Mercadona will remove the single plastic bag use in all its sections, as well as the plastic disposables. Until 2025, the use of said material will decrease by 25% in their packaging, replacing it with other materials (such as potato starch for fruit and vegetable bags) or with recycled plastic. All this, Â «always guaranteeing food safety and the quality of the products.

To close the circle, the company undertakes a to recycle 100% Â »of the waste it generates -in store, online and in home service-, and to a help its customers to recycle, providing them with useful information both on the packaging and in the store, indicate company sources.

Sections report on sustainability goals and measures.

In these efficient stores, in addition, the food company will installa recycling bin for coffee capsules, where the capsules used at home will be deposited.

To develop this strategy, Mercadona has trained its 90,000 employees, in addition to transmitting its objectives to suppliers.

Regarding the clients (bosses for the company), They will have first-hand information in all 6.25 stores such as the one on Avenida del Mar, as well as a section on Mercadona’s website on recycling and sustainability. In addition, all the company’s brand packaging will provide information for proper recycling.
