Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
“This aggressive war by Russia marks a turning point in the history of Europe after the end of the Cold War,” Merkel said.
“There is no excuse for this blatant violation of international law and I condemn it in the strongest possible terms,” he said.
“My thoughts and solidarity are with the Ukrainian people and government under President Volodymyr Zelesny in these horrific times and days,” said the former German chancellor, expressing “full support” for the EU NATO, the UN and the G7 for an immediate end to the war.
Merkel was Germany’s chancellor in 2014 when Russia annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea. He stressed at the time that it was important to keep a channel of communication open with Moscow.
However, he now pointed out that the situation is different, because the attack is aimed at the whole of Ukraine.
