Meta is setting up a new working group that will focus on creating paid products and features for its Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms, a company spokesperson said on Wednesday.
“Any new product will be complementary to our current ad business,” a company spokesperson told Reuters in an emailed statement.
The move would put Meta on the same path as companies like Snap and Twitter, which have started charging users for access to additional features.
The development of these tools was initially disclosed by the technology portal The Verge.
The company has no plans to allow users to pay to opt out of ads and is committed to growing the ad business, John Hegeman, Meta’s head of ads and commercial products, said in an interview with The Verge.
In the longer term, Meta sees paid features becoming a more significant part of its business, Hegeman told the portal.
Last month, Meta posted its first quarterly revenue decline, as recession fears and competitive pressures brought down ad sales.
The group, called New Monetization Experiments, will be led by Pratiti Raychoudhury, who was previously head of research at Meta, The Verge reported.
