Mexico: journalist shot dead, third in less than a month

 

A Mexican journalist was shot dead on Monday, November 9, according to press defense NGOs. “We deplore the death of Israel Vasquez, a journalist from Salamanca (northwest of Mexico) who was shot dead this morning,” the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said. Israel Vasquez, reporter for the digital daily El Salmantino, in Salamanca, was working on the discovery of human remains in the state of Guanajuato, known in Mexico for its violence, when he was shot, according to CPJ and RSF.

He is the third journalist killed in less than a month in Mexico and the seventh this year, according to a count from Agence France-Presse. The authorities of the State of Guanajato have so far not responded to requests from Agence France-Presse to confirm this assassination. “CPJ regrets the death of Israel Vázquez Rangel, a journalist from Salamanca, who was shot dead this morning. He is the third reporter killed in Mexico in less than a month, ”the Committee to Protect Journalists wrote on Twitter.

Reporters Without Borders also condemned this act and called on the Mexican authorities to take the necessary security measures to protect the family and colleagues of Israel Vazquez. “In less than a month, three journalists have been killed, 17 in six years, seven this year, it is a very regrettable situation.
