Microsoft: Don’t upgrade to Windows 11 if you have a new Intel. There will be a blue screen

Microsoft has confirmed a known issue affecting owners of computers upgraded to Windows 11 with the latest Intel Core and Atom series processors – Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) popping up due to incompatibility with Intel Smart Sound Technology audio drivers.

Intel SST is a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) for audio that is integrated into the company’s latest processors. It is used for processing audio with speech and for voice interactions.

According to official data, the problem affects the driver, which is called Intel® Smart Sound Technology (Intel® SST) Audio Controller in the “Device Manager” under “System devices”, has the file IntcAudioBus.sys, as well as version 10.29.0.5152 and earlier or 10.30.0.5152 and earlier. The problem is so serious that Microsoft has blocked the automatic update of affected computers to Windows 11 and is not recommending that users update manually until the issue is resolved by the developers.

The only way to avoid a blue screen of death when updating is to install an updated driver from Intel in advance, if it is already available for a specific computer. The driver must be version 10.30.00.5714 and later or 10.29.00.5714 and later. As a precaution, an automatic prompt to upgrade to Windows 11 may not appear until 48 hours after the correct drivers have been installed.
