Minas Gerais confirms cases of oropouche fever in the state

The Minas Gerais Health Department reports that four cases of oropouche fever were confirmed in the state this month. The confirmations were made by the Central Public Health Laboratory of the Ezequiel Dias Foundation (Funed).

Among the cases identified in Minas Gerais, two are located in Ipatinga, one in Gonzaga and another in the municipality of Congonhas. Patients who were detected by laboratory tests are being monitored and have controlled symptoms.

The ministry also stated that the state did not record cases or deaths from oropouche fever until 2023 and that, through the Center for Strategic Information on Health Surveillance of Minas Gerais, it is monitoring the evolution of cases and conducting epidemiological investigation in the state.

According to the latest epidemiological update from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), published on May 9, 2024, confirmed cases of the disease were recorded in four countries in South America: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia and Peru.

The report from the Emergency Operation Center (COE) Dengue and other Arboviruses, updated on May 21 this year, showed that 5,530 samples with detectable results for the virus were identified in Brazil this year, with 91.4% concentrated in the Amazon region . Most cases were likely to be infected in the northern states of the country.
