Minas Gerais is hit by extremely heavy rain and remains under storm warning

Several regions of Minas Gerais were hit by heavy rains this Wednesday (13). The capital of Minas Gerais is on alert for rain accompanied by lightning and winds until Thursday morning (14), according to the municipality’s Civil Defense.

The agency also reported that on Wednesday afternoon (13), it was raining in all nine regions of Belo Horizonte. Several roads were closed due to the risk of streams overflowing. Other avenues were blocked by flooding.

According to the Minas Gerais Military Fire Department (CBMMG), they have already been called to respond to several incidents of falling trees, walls and flooding.

The most serious occurrence to date, according to the corporation, was the death of a 45-year-old man who died after receiving an electric shock when struck by lightning in Belo Horizonte.


According to Inmet, the National Institute of Meteorology, 626 cities in Minas Gerais are under orange alert for intense rain. The alert is valid until 10am this Thursday (14).

Winds can reach 100km/h, the warning predicts rain between 30 and 60 mm/h or 50 and 100 mm/day. There is a risk of electricity cuts, falling tree branches, flooding and electrical discharges. In total, 1154 Brazilian cities are under Inmet alert.
