In the Federal Supreme Court (STF), the expectation among some ministers heard by the CNN in a reserved character, is that the administration of Rosa Weber, which begins in September, manages to take the Court out of the spotlight.
The minister has no dialogue with the political milieu and, in this way, would avoid the Court’s contact with the National Congress and the Planalto Palace, which would generate less noise. In addition, she has a more discreet profile than the current president, Luiz Fux.
In the opinion of some judges, under Rosa Weber’s presidency it will be up to other ministers to make contact with politics, behind the scenes – as, incidentally, has always happened. Today, André Mendonça and Kassio Nunes Marques are the government’s main interlocutors in the Supreme Court. Dias Toffoli and Gilmar Mendes are also in the group.
When he took command of the STF two years ago, Fux tried to take the STF out of the spotlight. The previous administration was under Dias Toffoli, who had a closer relationship with President Jair Bolsonaro. The president even visited the minister’s residence at the time, to eat a pizza. Fux made the relationship with Bolsonaro more institutional. Still, he failed to appease the tempers between the Court and the government.
Rosa Weber would be on a different level than Toffoli and Fux. Neither personal nor formal. The relationship that is expected of her with Bolsonaro will be the minimum possible. However, peace between the STF and the government does not depend only on the command of the court, in the assessment of these ministers heard by the CNN .
If Bolsonaro is reelected, it is unlikely that the Court will leave the spotlight. After all, there are inquiries going through the Court that directly affect the president. And, according to ministers, the tendency is for political issues to continue to be addressed by the STF to resolve through lawsuits.
On another front, the expectation of court ministers is that the environment will be calmer internally. As Rosa Weber does not make many statements, the possibility of causing friction between the ministers would be rarer. To interlocutors, the minister has said that she intends to strengthen the court and return the liturgy to the Court.
