MME believes in improving hydroelectric storage by May 2022

The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) reported an improvement in forecasts for the storage of hydroelectric plants in 2022, after a meeting of the Electric Sector Monitoring Committee (CMSE) which decided to limit the additional dispatch of thermoelectric generation, while maintaining exceptional measures to meet the cargo, said the folder in a note on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the hydroelectric reservoirs of the Southeast/Midwest subsystem are still under recovery, and the expectation is that they will reach about 55.9% in May 2022, a level 12.9 percentage points above that verified on May 31 this year.

The level was estimated based on the repetition of the critical rainfall scenario verified in the rainy season of 2020/2021.

Therefore, the CMSE decided to limit the additional dispatch of resources to meet the load in the National Interconnected System (SIN), so that the total thermoelectric generation of the plants dispatched by the National Electric System Operator (ONS), already added to the imported amounts, do not exceed 15 gigawatts (GW) average over the month.

According to the MME, the measure seeks to optimize the total cost of operation and “privileges the use of cheaper resources, as needed, concomitantly with the expected recovery of storage in the country’s main reservoirs throughout the current rainy season.”

Also at the meeting, the committee resolved to maintain exceptional measures to service the cargo and guarantee service in 2022. The application of these measures will continue to be periodically reassessed, in technical meetings.
