Mohammed bin Zayed has been elected President of the United Arab Emirates

The Supreme Federal Council of the United Arab Emirates today elected the governor of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as the new president of the United Arab Emirates, the state news agency WAM reported.

Mohammed bin Zayed, known by the initials “MBZ”, succeeded his half-brother, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan, who passed away yesterday, Friday.

Mohammed bin Zayed was “unanimously elected” by the members of the Supreme Federal Council, which unites seven emirates, including those of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, WAM reported.

The third son of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan, the first president and founder of the emirate federation, “MBZ”, the crown prince of the capital and the emirate of Abu Dhabi, already had the reins of the country after a stroke. 2014, had forced Caliph bin Zayed al-Nahyan to step down.

Mohammed bin Zayed “thanked” the sheikhs of the Supreme Federal Council “for their trust”.

The election of “MBZ” formalizes his position as the leader of this oil-rich country of about 10 million inhabitants.

Under his leadership, the Emirates, an ally of Saudi Arabia and the United States, was the first Gulf country to normalize relations with Israel in 2020.

The “MBZ” is also widely believed to be the one who sent Emirati troops to Yemen in 2015 as part of a coalition under Saudi Arabia against the Houthi rebels.
