A 70-year-old man was killed after trying to take photos of a female moose and her newborn calves near his home in southern Alaska on Sunday, authorities said.
The elderly man, identified as Dale Chorman, was with a friend when the pair spotted the female moose and her two newborn calves in the city of Homer, the Alaska Department of Public Safety said.
“Chorman was with another adult male trying to take photos of two newborn elk calves when the animal attacked them,” agency spokesman Austin McDaniel told CNN by email this Tuesday (21).
An initial report says the female moose attacked the two men and kicked one of them. The other man was not injured, the spokesman said.
Chorman's body was sent to the Alaska State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. A CNN contacted the coroner for more information.
A small adult female elk can weigh up to 800 pounds and stand up to 6 feet tall, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
While in the company of her calves, a female moose will not hesitate to attack if anyone approaches them, McDaniel explained.
“Moose are known to be tireless in their efforts to defend their young from perceived threats,” he added.
“Alaska Wildlife Troopers encourage Alaskans not to approach elk calves to take photos or try to pet them, as there is likely an adult animal nearby.”
The city of Homer, where the case took place, is about 350 kilometers south of Anchorage, the largest city in the country, on the Kenai Peninsula, in Alaska.
