Moqtada Sadr: Rumors of hunger strike to stop explosion of violence in Iraq

Powerful Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr has reportedly announced he will go on hunger strike until the violence and use of weapons in Iraq stops, state news agency INA and the country’s public television reported late tonight.

It doesn’t exist at the moment no confirmation of this information from the Sadr’s office.

Earlier today, after Sadr announced his retirement from politics, his supporters stormed a government compound in central Baghdad and clashed with rival Shiites, supported by Iran.

At least 10 people were killed and hundreds were injured.

According to a img close to the security services and as relayed by the Athens News Agency, at least seven mortar shells fell in the evening in the Green Zone of Baghdad. The img, who asked to remain anonymous, was unable to provide an account of the attack. It is also unknown which group is responsible.

Automatic weapons fire could be heard from the Green Zone, home to foreign embassies and many government buildings.
