Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, on February 24, until last Thursday (3), more than 1.2 million refugees have left Ukraine, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) .
In all, 1,209,976 refugees fled the country in less than ten days of conflict. More than half of the population that left Ukraine crossed the border into Poland.
Another large part went to other neighboring countries including Hungary, Slovakia, Moldova and Romania.
UNHCR said more than a million left in the first week alone, and many more are “on the move in and out of the country”, with many internally displaced families relocating.
According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the conflict between Ukraine and Russia has also caused the displacement of at least half a million children who have already fled Ukraine to neighboring countries.
In an interview with CNNthe spokesman for the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Luiz Fernando Godinho, explained the agency’s humanitarian actions to refugees who have already left Ukraine after the invasion of Russian military forces.
“We are present in all countries in the neighborhood region, providing support. Emergency actions are being focused on sheltering these people and distributing basic necessities, such as mattresses, blankets, hygiene items, all kinds of items that people need to receive at first”, he said.
