More than 900 dead and injured by cluster weapons in Ukraine in 2022

To them 900 dead and wounded are recorded in Ukraine from dispersal weapons last year, according to a report published today by the Cluster Weapons Observatory.

For the past year, the majority of a total of 1,172 victims of cluster weapons in the world was recorded in Ukraine, according to the report, where the attacks killed or injured at least 890 people, most of them civilians, while 26 more were killed or injured by the remnants of cluster weapons, as reported by APE-MPE.

Cluster munitions consist of individual bombs carried by missiles which explode in the air releasing dozens or hundreds of small bombs that they carry and disperse over a wide area. A non-negligible proportion of these bombs do not explode as intended and remain where they fell, posing a constant danger, mainly to civilians.

According to the report, Russia has widely used cluster weapons in Ukraine since the February 2022 Russian invasion, while Ukraine has used them on a smaller scale. In Ukraine, it is likely that a large number of victims have gone unreported, says Lauren Percy, one of the authors of the report, which cites at least 51 attacks with such weapons.

Globally, 1,172 new victims of cluster weapons have been recorded in 2022 in eight countries (Azerbaijan, Iraq, Laos, Lebanon, Burma (Myanmar), Syria, Ukraine and Yemen). It is the highest number of casualties recorded since the publication of the first report by the Cluster Weapons Observatory in 2010. In total, 987 people were killed or injured in the cluster weapon attacks and at least 185 were killed or injured in the timed detonation of the remaining bombs. Outside of Ukraine, cluster munition attacks have been reported in Syria and Myanmar, where armed forces have used such weapons. According to the report, civilians make up 95% of the victims. In total, 112 countries have ratified the 2008 Convention on the Prohibition of the Production and Use of Cluster Munitions and 12 have signed it.
