Moscow bans 32 New Zealand officials and journalists from entering Russia

Russia announced today that it will ban 32 New Zealand officials and journalists from entering its territory, in response to similar measures taken by New Zealand against Moscow over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Among those sanctioned are Wellington Mayor Andrew John Whitfield Foster and Auckland Mayor Philip Bruce Gough, New Zealand Navy Commander Garryn Golding and journalists Kate Green and Josie Pagani (The Dominion Post), the Russian said. Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.

This decision is made “in response to New Zealand government sanctions affecting more and more Russian citizens,” the press release explains.

Russia launched a military attack on Ukraine on February 24. That attack prompted unprecedented Western sanctions against Moscow, which retaliated with similar measures.

Already in April, Russia banned New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, as well as several ministers and MPs, from entering its territory.
