The Public Ministry of São Paulo reported, this Friday (10), that it asked the Civil Police to open a police investigation to investigate the case of GloboNews journalist, Natuza Nery, threatened inside a supermarket, at the end of 2024.
According to prosecutor Roberto Bacal, investigations can help to “support a subsequent filing of a complaint”.
Natuza called the Military Police after being confronted by a security agent while shopping there. Both were taken to the police station, where the Internal Affairs took over the case.
At the beginning of this year, the Civil Police Internal Affairs Office opened an investigation to investigate the conduct of the civil police officer, who has already been removed from his operational activities. The name of the police officer who allegedly made the threats was not confirmed.
According to the presenter’s lawyer, Augusto de Arruda Botelho, the police officer told her that the journalists had to be “annihilated”. THE CNN Botelho said that Natuza was approached by the police officer inside the supermarket and that, initially, the agent had asked her if she worked at GloboNews. After confirmation, he would have started criticizing the journalist.
“The threat suffered by Natuza Nery affects not only the journalist, but the entire Brazilian press. It is extremely serious that due to ideological or political differences, a journalist and his vehicle are attacked in this way. The free press is one of the main pillars of a democracy and must always be protected and preserved”, highlighted lawyer Augusto de Arruda Botelho.
After the case was released, Minister Gilmar Mendes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), stated on a social network that “the attack suffered by Natuza Nery, due to the simple daily exercise of her office, requires a prompt response from the public authorities, especially criminal prosecution bodies”.
The Chief Minister of the Attorney General’s Office (AGU), Jorge Messias, also spoke out and demanded speed in the investigation and accountability of the aggressor.
