The Public Ministry of the State of São Paulo (MPSP) opened an investigation to investigate the causes and responsibilities for the fire that hit Shopping 25 de Março, located in Brás, central region of São Paulo, this Wednesday (30).
The large fire that hit the establishment located on Rua Barão de Ladário started around 6:30 am and was only controlled around 1 pm on Wednesday afternoon (30).
In the document, the 6th Housing and Urban Planning Prosecutor, Moacir Tonani Junior, mentions the need to determine whether the property was suitable and had the documentation up to date to operate.
“Considering the need to determine whether the property was fit for regular operation, as well as whether it had the necessary equipment to avoid or mitigate the event, as people were injured in the area”, says an excerpt of the text.
The investigation also aims to determine direct or indirect responsibility for the case.
“Finally, there is a need to determine direct or indirect responsibility for the facts, whether by the explorers of the site or by the omission of the Public Power consisting of the failure to monitor it”.
Civil Defense reported that the fire caused the roof of the property to collapse.
The building where the popular shopping mall operated had its Fire Department Inspection Certificate (AVCB) expired since August this year. Regarding the shopping center’s structural safety, the City of São Paulo informed that the safety certificate for Shopping 25 was approved in 2022 and is valid until 2027.
Three people were taken to health facilities in the region, but there was no risk of death.
Another fire
This was the second fire in the region in less than a week. Last Sunday (27), a fire broke out on the top floor of a commercial building on Rua Doutor João Alves de Lima.
