The Federal Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro forwarded last Wednesday (10) to the Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, a request in which it defends the federalization of four cases of police violence that occurred in the state of Rio, between 2018 and 2022, including the Jacarezinho Massacre, which occurred in May 2021.
For the Federal Prosecutor Eduardo Benones, who is the coordinator of the MPF’s External Control Unit for Police Activity in the state, the situation of serious violation of human rights and the possibility of international accountability of the Brazilian State justify the federalization of the cases.
If they are federalized, the cases will be investigated by the Federal Police and the Federal Public Ministry in their respective units in Rio.
The MPF also recommended that cemeteries in Rio de Janeiro preserve the remains of the 27 victims of the action carried out on May 6, 2021, in the Jacarezinho complex, which became known as the “Jacarezinho Massacre”, and was the deadliest in history.
The recommendation aims to protect any elements present in the bodies until the exhumation is carried out, which should be accompanied by independent experts who will analyze the remains to elucidate the circumstances of the deaths.
The request was sent to the administrators of the cemeteries of the Venerable Third Order of Saint Francis of Penance, Memorial do Rio, Nilópolis (Olinda Cemetery), as well as Caju (São Francisco Xavier) and Inhaúma, where the victims were buried. All of them must provide, within 10 days, any clarifications and information they deem necessary regarding compliance with the recommendation from the organization.
