Mpox: learn about the symptoms of the disease and what to do if you suspect it

THE World Health Organization (WHO) declared, this Wednesday (14), the Current MPOX outbreak as a global health emergency . In general, the disease has skin rashes or skin lesions and adenomegaly, that is, swollen lymph nodes, as its most common symptoms.

Other signs may also indicate whether you have contracted the disease. These include: fever, body aches, headache, chills and weakness.

According to information from Ministry of Health the time interval between first contact with the virus and the onset of signs and symptoms of mpox (incubation period) is typically 3 to 16 days, but can be as long as 21 days.

Furthermore, after symptoms such as a rash appear, the period when the scabs disappear, the infected person is no longer able to transmit the virus to others. Rashes usually begin within one to three days after the onset of fever, but sometimes they may appear before the fever.

The lesions may be flat or slightly raised, filled with clear or yellowish fluid, and may form crusts that dry and fall off. The number of lesions on a person can range from a few to thousands of lesions. The rashes tend to be concentrated on the face, palms of the hands, and soles of the feet, but can occur anywhere on the body, including the mouth, eyes, genitals, and anus.

What to do if you suspect mpox?

If you think you have symptoms compatible with the disease, seek a health unit for evaluation and inform if you have had close contact with someone with suspected or confirmed disease. If the suspicion is confirmed, isolate yourself and avoid close contact with others if possible . Wash your hands regularly and follow the guidelines to protect others from infection.

The WHO decision was made after an emergency committee took into account cases reported outside the Democratic Republic of Congo, where infections have been on the rise for more than two years. A more deadly strain of the virus had reached four previously unaffected provinces in Africa. That strain had previously been contained in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Previously known as monkeypox, mpox is a viral disease that can spread easily between infected people and animals. It can spread through close contact, such as touching, kissing or sex, as well as through contaminated materials such as bedding, clothing and needles, according to the WHO.
