The acceleration of the Ilioupoli Urban Tunnel project was the subject of the topical question of ND MP Vassilis Spanakis that was discussed earlier today in the Parliament.
The project “does not concern only the areas of the South Sector, but the whole of Attica” and is connected to the necessary upgrading of Vouliagmeni Street, Mr. Spanakis said.
In his answer, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Konstantinos Ah. Karamanlis, said that the implementation of the project should be given a boost and for this reason, as he said, “the ministry has asked Lamda Development to finance the study of the project which is part of the PDE 2021-2027” and added that in essentially, the project is on track for implementation.
“With the Ilioupoli Tunnel and the upgrade of Vouliagmeni Street, the everyday life of citizens will improve and traffic accidents will decrease,” said the ND MP.
“There are three main projects in Attica. The most basic is what we are discussing today here in this room,” said the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport and added: “One is the extension of Kymi Avenue, which we have put out to tender, because this had a design maturity on December 31, 2021 and this project will be contracted very quickly. The second project is about the extensions to Rafina and Lavrio. And this is an extremely vital project that will be able to decongest a very a large part of Attica, which the truth is that it is expanding. And the third, of course, is the project we are discussing today. It is a technically very difficult project and that is why a very serious study group wants to study it.”
The West Attica Suburban will reach Megara
The aim is to tender the project of the Western Attica suburb, within the summer, said the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Kostas Karamanlis, answering earlier today to a topical question of MeRA25 MP, Kriton Arsenis.
“It is a new suburban railway line, 36 km long, which will start from Ano Liosia, pass through Aspropyrgos, Elefsina and end in Megara, also utilizing the old metric line, which has been decommissioned here and about 15 years”, said the minister and added that “the project of extending the “Liosia-Megara” railway line to the old Megara Railway Station, i.e. within the settlement, will also be carried out”.
“The OSE in the project under auction has provided for it with an option. We are simply auctioning in the first phase the first part for which we already have environmental permits”, he explained and added that the extension in question is about 3 kilometers long, and in its entire length will run within the existing railway corridor of the old metric railway line to Peloponnese.
“We are talking about Western Attica which, unfortunately, you have to admit has so far been the “backyard” of Athens”, said MeRA25 MP Kriton Arsenis who pointed out that the suburban train does not reach the city of Megara, it reaches three and a half kilometers outside the city of Megara, which is the largest city in Western Attica.
