MST invades another farm in the interior of Bahia

The Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) announced that it had invaded another farm in the interior of Bahia in the early hours of last Sunday (12). At the end of February, the Movement occupied three properties belonging to the company Suzano in the state.

According to a publication on MST social networks, around 170 families took over the “Fazenda Recreio”, which covers an area of 1,400 hectares in the municipality of Macajuba, in Chapada Diamantina, about 300 km from Salvador.

The MST alleges that the farm is unproductive and has been abandoned for years without fulfilling its social function. “We defend the right to land, the production of healthy food and food on the people’s table”, declared the leader of the MST in Chapada Diamantina, Simone Souza.

The Military Police of Bahia (PMBA) informed the CNN, in a note, that police officers from the 11th BPM responded to an incident “with information that a group of people had invaded a rural property in the municipality of Macajuba”.

MST vacated Suzano properties in Bahia at the beginning of the month

In early March, Suzano informed the CNN that the MST vacated all the pulp paper manufacturer’s properties in the municipalities of Mucuri, Teixeira de Freitas and Caravelas.

Also according to Suzano, the company is now investigating the damage caused. The land had been invaded at dawn on February 27th.

The MST claimed that the act was “a complaint against the monoculture of eucalyptus in the region, which has been growing in recent decades. And the use of pesticides by the company, which harms the few areas cultivated by peasant families and the rural exodus caused by the monoculture of eucalyptus in the region.”

Suzano stated that the actions “violate the right to private property” and said that it fully complies with environmental and labor laws in the areas where it has work activities.

The departure from the premises, in compliance with the decision of the Court, took place in a peaceful and organized manner. Suzano had already obtained three preliminary injunctions in its favor.
