Municipal school teachers decide to maintain strike in Rio de Janeiro

In an assembly held this Friday morning (29), teachers from the Rio de Janeiro municipal network decided to maintain the category’s strike, which began last Monday.

The decision to continue the strike comes one day after the court order that demanded the end of the strike, in response to a request made by Rio City Hall, which imposed a fine of R$500,000 on the State Union of Education Professionals and R$ 5,000 to the union directors for each day of non-compliance.

The strikers’ main demand is for the immediate filing of PL 186/2024, which increases the number of classes for teachers and changes the criteria for vacations and licenses, and the repeal of Law 8666/2024, which extends contracts to up to 6 years network temporary.

The two measures are called “packages of evil” by critics of the Eduardo Paes (PSD) administration.

In a statement, Rio City Hall stated that “the Municipal Department of Education has been in constant dialogue with teacher representatives. Several meetings have been held. The category’s strike was declared illegal by the courts. The municipal network is close to the end of the school year and will follow the normal school calendar planning, without changes.”
