But, this will happen in Rembrandthuis Museum for a week in June, as a tattoo studio will be set up in the museum, to offer visitors a lasting memento of their trip, in the form of a tattoo Rembrandt.

Henk Schiffmacher, famous tattooist and one of the team of four tattoo artists of Schiffmacher & Veldhoen, stated that Rembrandt he was no stranger to body art.

Rembrandt loved the weird and wonderful“, he stated according to the dutchnews.nl. “If a ship came from the East after a few years’ absence, Rembrandt would go to the harbor and he bought all sorts of oddities. In fact, he had a little room full of wonders and collected all kinds of little things – which we know because when he went bankrupt, everything was described.’

What the Schiffmacher & Veldhoen team will do from June 19 to 25 is to invite its guests museum to book a place in the studio opened in Rembrandt’s old house. A tattoo will cost from 100 to 250 euros.

The poor man’s Rembrandt

Tattoo artist Schiffmacher said there is a growing demand for tattoos inspired by Rembrandt or the famous house where he worked, sold his art and taught students. The studio decided to approach museums that work with Rembrandt to suggests a collaboration.

“Of course, we grew up with Rembrandt from childhood,” he said. “If you were a kid who sat there and painted, you were always known as Rembrandt… he is the most famous artist we have. I’ve heard that the technique that Rembrandt often used for etching is also a bit like tattooing.’

Rembrandt used a needle to etch a special coating on a copper plate, while his artists would use human skin. “The cool thing is, this looks a bit like “Rembrandt of the poor“, a title I stole from an old English tattoo artist, because you make a piece of art for people who don’t collect art otherwise. And in fact, tattooing is the most collectible art in the world.”

Schiffmacher said his visitors Amsterdam they often take a piece of his art as a souvenir and added that the British are particularly fond of tattoos. “When you are in this house, Rembrandt’s soul is there. Especially if you are alone, there is a certain atmosphere. You can almost hear Rembrandt’s children shouting or running to and fro. You can’t get any closer to an artist.”
