A senior Myanmar junta official said today that the sentencing of former leader Aung San Suu Kyi proved that no one was above the law, adding that the army chief had reduced his sentence “for humanitarian reasons”.
Information Minister Mung Mung On pointed out during an online press conference that Myanmar’s judicial system is impartial and that the sentencing of Nobel laureate Suu Kyi on Monday was legal.
Suu Kyi, 76, was sentenced to four years in prison for inciting and violating health regulations adopted due to the covid-19 pandemic. The junta leader later reduced her sentence to two years and added that he would build her where she is being held, in an unknown location.
Along with Suu Kyi, former President Wayne Mead was also sentenced to four years in prison, which was later reduced to two.
“No one is above the law,” said Mung Mung On, adding that Myanmar’s judicial system was “impartial”.
Myanmar is plunged into crisis following a military coup on February 1 following a coup. Suu Kyi and most members of her government.
Protests against the junta have not stopped despite the fact that more than 1,300 people have been killed since February and more than 10,000 have been arrested in the crackdown on any resistance.
