THE World Health Organization (WHO) investigates the deaths of nearly 100 people who have fallen ill with an as yet unidentified disease in South Sudan.
Last week, the country’s health ministry said an unknown disease has killed dozens of people in Fangak District, Jonglei State, an area that has recently been hit by floods.
A local health official noted that the initial samples collected in the area were negative for a cholera test.
“We decided to send a team to go and do research and risk assessment. “It will be able to collect samples from patients – but the number we received was 89 deaths,” Sheila Baya of the World Health Organization told the BBC.
According to her, no one can reach the Fangak area by road due to the floods and the group was waiting for a helicopter to return its members to the capital on Wednesday.
