N. Mitarakis: Turkey endangers human life every day

The Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Notis Mitarakis, harshly criticized Turkey, which “endangers human life every day”, speaking at the UN International Migration Review Forum, which is being held in New York.

Referring to the EU-Turkey Joint Declaration, which, as he explained, Turkey “does not implement”, Mr. Mitarakis pointed out that the neighboring country “endangers human life every day in the Aegean and the land borders. “Turkey has chosen not to provide protection to all refugees, as provided for in the Geneva Convention.”

Responding to remarks by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu about the repatriation of migrants to the Aegean from Greece, the Greek Minister of Immigration stressed that “our strategy protects human lives, as evidenced by the reduction in the number of deaths in the Aegean in recent years. “Greece is resolutely protecting human lives. It is crucial that we focus on these positive developments, avoiding misinformation that spreads for political purposes.”

Finally, the Minister of Immigration called on the European Union “to take further action, through a common European protection area”, while referring to the networks of smugglers and the protection of the EU’s external borders, Mr. Mitarakis stressed: “We can not allow “It is up to the traffickers to decide who comes and lives in Europe. After all, we are not adjacent to war zones other than Ukraine, but to countries of the European Union, NATO and the Council of Europe.”
