“In Greece, with the strongest fleet, we cannot only operate the Syros Shipyard. We need both the “Skaramaga” and the “Elefsina”. It should be understood that the non-remediation of the Elefsina Shipyards essentially means bankruptcy, i.e. the loss of anyway”, emphasized the Deputy Minister of Development and Investments Nikos Papathanasis speaking to the Plenary.
He invited the opposition MPs who believe that with this consolidation plan the rights of the workers are not guaranteed “to go to the gathering held by the 600 workers together with members of their families, in front of the Parliament, to ascertain their will”.
Mr. Papathanasis underlined that if we do not agree today, which of course will not happen, this will mean that the Elefsina Shipyards go into bankruptcy. Workers would lose 95% of the money they receive. The Navy would lose 99% of the money it claims. EFKA would receive 4 million and the Greek government much less money.
With this agreement, said Mr. Papathanasis, “we achieve the upgrade of our shipbuilding industry, we put another industry to work, we create jobs and attract investment funds, a dynamic is created in Western Athens and we move into a new era” and he concluded “there is no other solution. The solution is this and all the rest is theoretical”.
