China’s Ministry of Agriculture is urgently calling for more research into new crop varieties that can tolerate alkaline soil and shorter growing seasons in order to ensure food security amid climate change.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said on Wednesday it had issued a notice calling for more rapid research and demonstrations of new varieties, including early maturing winter rapeseed and regenerative rice.
China is facing increasingly extreme and unpredictable weather, from devastating floods to high temperatures that have dried up major rivers and lakes and are threatening autumn crops.
The government has previously said that farmers will need to adapt by switching to higher-yielding, stress-resistant crops to deal with the increasing risks.
They are currently trying to save the rice crop in eastern parts of Anhui and Jiangsu provinces from drought.
The ministry said provincial authorities should accelerate research into regenerative rice varieties and produce grains tolerant of saline and alkaline soils.
It also wants to promote early maturing winter rapeseed, which can be grown after the rice harvest, to expand oilseed production in southern China.
Political support and funding must be increased to support the research effort, the notice added.
