Opens on Thursday (23), the new film directed by the British Ridley Scott, “Napoleon”, which portrays the life of the French emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821). The military leader is played by American actor Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”).
The 2 hour and 38 minute film talks about the statesman’s journey, his origins and his rapid rise to the throne. And who said there is no romance in war films? In “Napoleon”, the emperor’s relationship with his wife, Josephine (Vanessa Kirby), will take over many scenes and also becomes a central part of the plot.
In interview for the New Yorker magazine, Scott’s military advisor, Paul Biddiss, confesses that the director is extremely perfectionist in relation to the elements and that he prioritizes (a lot) uniformity between scenes. He comments that the director made sure that all the hats were straight and that no bayonet (a knife-shaped weapon) could be out of sync. “I had a few sleepless nights because I wanted to make sure that those guys (the actors) they did it perfectly”, says Biddiss in an interview. “On the day, they performed brilliantly. I could hear Ridley on the radio: ‘Buy these boys a beer!’” he adds.
The counselor also shared that the most complicated maneuver on the scene was forming human squares with the bayonets pointed outward. This infantry formation was used by the British to scare off the French’s horses.
Ridley Scott also directed “Gladiator,” “Alien” and “Blade Runner.” The film’s script is by David Scarpa, who wrote “The Last Castle” and “Todo o Dinheiro do Mundo”. After the cinema premiere, Apple TV+ will add the work to its catalog and even an extended version, lasting 4 hours, is already being considered for streaming. Watch the trailer:
