National consumption of electricity increased by 1.2% in May compared to the same period in 2021, reaching 63,169 average megawatts, according to preliminary data released this Monday by the Electric Energy Commercialization Chamber (CCEE).
The advance was driven by the consumption of industry and large companies, which contract their energy on the free market.
In May, demand in this market grew 5.8% year-on-year, with an emphasis on higher consumption in the wood, pulp and paper, services and beverages sectors.
In the regulated environment, which supplies electricity to small and medium-sized companies and homes, there was a 1.3% drop in consumption in May.
According to the CCEE, the performance was greatly affected by the drop in temperatures in much of Brazil from the second half of the month, unusual for this period of the year.
In terms of energy generation, hydroelectric plants produced 11.1% more than in May 2021, as a result of the more favorable hydrological scenario.
As a result, there was a lower dispatch of thermoelectric plants, with a 37.2% decline in generation from this source.
In renewables, photovoltaic solar generation grew 52.6% in May, while wind power rose 10.5%.
