The reconstruction of the National Museum runs up against some issues, the biggest of which is financial. The project is valued at 380 million reais. About 65% of the amount was raised, equivalent to R$ 245 million.
Since the fire in 2018, the museum has been seeking fundraising partnerships. One of them came from the German government with an investment of one million euros.
The works started in 2020. Facades and roofs are being rebuilt. According to the institution’s director, Alexander Kellner, at least 30% of block 1 was completed and about 5% of the total project.
The palace has 4 blocks and designs are being done by block according to approval.
The institution counts on the arrival of new private and public, national and international partnerships to reach the total of the described budget.
Due to financial issues and the pandemic, a new schedule was presented. The reopening of the museum, previously scheduled for 2026, should take place in the first half of 2027.
Of the 20 million pieces that the institute had, 85% were lost in the fire of September 2, 2018. The forecast for renovations in 2022 includes partial delivery of the works on the facades and roofs of block 1.
For 2023 delivery of the renovation and expansion work of the central library, in addition to the works on the Research and Teaching Campus. The forecast between 2024 and 2027 is to deliver the facades and roofs of blocks 2, 3 and 4 until the total reopening.
