Netflix is betting on a new vintage romance. The last literary work of Jane Austen, Persuasion, is being adapted for a movie by the giant of streaming and will star Dakota Johnson, Cosmo Jarvis and Henry Golding.
Suki Waterhouse, Richard E. Grant, Nikki Amuka-Bird and Ben Bailey will be cast, while Carrie Cracknell will direct. The film will have a more modern touch compared to the famous novel written by Austen.
Johnson will play Anne Elliot, a 27-year-old single woman with little chance of finding love until Captain Frederick Wentworth, the naval officer she rejected eight years ago, returns to live near her.
Golding, who participated in the comedy Crazy millionaires, will appear alongside Johnson in the role of Mr. Elliot. According to Deadline, this character gave the English actor the opportunity to play with the typical gentleman that Austen always described in her plays.
Persuasion is in charge of the production house MRC Film, with a script by Ron Bass and Alice Victoria Winslow. The recordings began in May of this year and is scheduled to hit the Netflix catalog in mid-2022.
It is not the first time that one of Austen’s literary works has been adapted for film. In addition to Netflix, production company Searchlight Pictures is developing another film adaptation with actress Sarah Snook and director Mahalia Belo.
