Netherlands detects more monkeypox cases, health officials say

Dutch health authorities announced more cases of monkeypox on Saturday, a day after the first case was confirmed.

“We found several patients in the Netherlands with monkeypox,” the National Institute of Health (RIVM) said in a statement.

The RIVM did not give an exact number or details about those infected, but said more information would be released after the weekend.

More than 100 cases of monkeypox, a viral infection most common in west and central Africa, were reported in Europe this week, with German officials describing the outbreak as the region’s biggest ever.

Where did monkeypox originate?

Monkeypox (Monkeypox) got its name in 1958, when “two outbreaks of a smallpox-like disease occurred in colonies of monkeys kept for research,” according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). United.

However, the main carrier of the disease, monkeypox, is still unknown, although “African rodents are suspected to participate in transmission,” the agency said.

The first known case of smallpox in people was “recorded in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, during a period of intensified efforts to eliminate smallpox,” the CDC said.
