“Peace be with all of you,” he told the lively crowd, speaking of fluent Italian. He also spoke of Spanish during his brief speech, but said nothing in English.

PREVOST, 69 years old and born in Chicago, spent most of his career as Missionary in Peru and has double Peruvian nationality.

He assumed the position of 267th Pope This Thursday.

Vision similar to Francisco’s

During the first speech to the Catholic faithful, Leo XIV said he sees the Church as the one who “builds bridges” and dialogues. In addition, the pontiff also paid tribute to the deceased Pope Francis, encouraging the faithful to remember the legacy of their predecessor.

“Let us keep in our ears the weak voice of Pope Francis who blesses Rome. The Pope who blessed Rome gave his blessing to the whole world that Easter morning,” said Leo XIV, referring to the day of Francis’ death on 21 April.

“Allow me to continue this blessing. God loves us. God loves everyone. Evil will not prevail,” he added in Italian, addressing the multitude gathered in the Vatican.
