New responsibilities to M. Schina, but also to Jourova and Raiders after the temporary removal of Vestager

Additional duties to its Vice President CommissionMargariti Schina, Vice-President Viera Jourova and Commissioner Didier Reyders are assigned following the temporary removal of Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager.

In particular, as stated in the Commission’s announcement and relayed by the Athens News Agency, the Commission’s Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager informed the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, of her candidacy as the official candidate of the Danish government for the position of President of the European Investment Bank and requested unpaid leave for the duration of the campaign.

The President granted the leave without pay to the Executive Vice-President, underlining that during this period the relevant provisions of the Treaties and the Code of Ethics for the members of the Commission are still in force.

During the period of Executive Vice-President Vestager’s temporary withdrawal from the work of the Commission, the President decided to assign the responsibility of steering and coordination for “Europe fit for the digital age” to Vice-President Jourova and the portfolio for competition to Commissioner Reyders who will report directly to the President. The President also decided to temporarily assign responsibility for the Innovation and Research portfolio to Vice-President Margaritis Schina until a new member of the Commission is appointed to replace Commissioner Gabriel.

The Commission shall also inform the European Parliament and the Council of these temporary changes.
