Thirteen years after the highest-grossing release in movie history, “Avatar” gets a sequel. Scheduled to open in Brazilian cinemas on December 15, “Avatar: The Way of Water” had a new trailer and images released on Wednesday (2).
The plot takes place more than a decade after the events of the first film and follows Sully’s family and the danger that haunts them. They must face a new threat on Pandora and fight for safety and survival.
James Cameron’s new feature (“Titanic” and “The Terminator”) will be three hours and 10 minutes long.
Production has been delayed seven times, with the first release scheduled for 2014.
According to the schedule on the official Avatar website, the franchise will have three more films. “Avatar 3” has already been completed and is scheduled for release on December 20, 2024; “Avatar 4” to December 18, 2026; and “Avatar 5” to December 22, 2028.
Remember the first movie
In “Avatar” James Cameron presents an exuberant alien world called Pandora where the Na’vi live, beings that appear to be primitive in the eyes of white humans, but highly evolved.
Avatars are biological bodies controlled by the human mind that move freely on Pandora. Jake Sully, a paralyzed ex-Marine, walks back through a avatar and falls in love with a Na’vi. This passion drives Jake to fight for Pandora’s survival.
At the time, the film released in 2009 featured advanced technology and became a phenomenon. The film was the first to make extensive use of motion capture. The format was already used in video games, but it was from “avatar” the technology began to be diffused in the cinema.
The production is responsible for the highest grossing in the history of cinema, taking in US$ 2.9 billion worldwide.
