New York has 14% increase in daily Covid-19 cases from record

New York State reported 44,431 new Covid-19 cases on Friday (24), an increase of 14% from Thursday’s record number of 38,835 cases.

“This is not a surprise,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said on Friday. “This is a very, very contagious variant,” referring to Ômicron, who arrived in town.

Hochul said the new cases were detected after nearly 360,000 tests of Covid-19 were conducted in just one day.

“With a lot of tests, the advantage is that we are able to control where the cases are and how we can control this spread,” said Hochul.

Hospitalizations in the state are increasing, but at a slower pace. Friday’s data had 4,744 New Yorkers hospitalized with Covid-19, marking a 4.6% increase from Thursday’s numbers.

Hochul also announced 69 new Covid-related deaths on Friday.

“Our hearts go out to the members of their families, very close to this beautiful holiday. Knowing that there will be an empty seat at the table must be extremely painful for them, so let’s keep them all in our prayers,” she said.
