New Zealand: PM criticizes UN ‘failure’ to prevent war in Ukraine

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern today criticized the UN’s “failure” to prevent war in Ukraine and accused Russia of imposing its “immoral” stance on the Security Council.

Ardern, who has repeatedly criticized the veto power held by the five permanent members of the Security Council (China, the US, France, Britain and Russia), reiterated her call for UN reforms.

The “failure” of the UN on the issue of Ukraine is due to the right of veto that Moscow has, the New Zealand prime minister estimated in a speech at the Lowy Institute in Sydney.

According to her, Russia used its seat on the Security Council to impose an “immoral position after an immoral and illegal war”.

“We need to reform the UN so that we don’t have to rely on individual countries to impose their own sanctions,” Ardern said, stressing that Russia should be held accountable for its invasion of Ukraine.

At the same time, he asked for the resources needed by the International Criminal Court to examine and try any war crimes committed in Ukraine.
