Nicaragua cuts diplomatic ties with the Netherlands

Nicaragua suspended diplomatic relations with the Netherlands this Friday (30), according to a statement published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Central American country.

The Nicaraguan government made the decision because the “interventionist and neo-colonial” European country “offended and continues to offend Nicaraguan families,” the statement said.

Earlier this week, Nicaraguan officials declared the EU ambassador “persona non grata” and also said that the country would not accept the new US ambassador, fueling tensions between President Daniel Ortega and the international community.

Ortega’s election

In November last year, Daniel Ortega won his fifth term as president of Nicaragua, the fourth in a row.

The electoral process was questioned by the United States, the European Union, the Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations for considering that there are no conditions for fair, democratic and well-observed elections.

The Nicaraguan elections were also marked by the cancellation of three political parties that would have been part of the opposition National Coalition and Citizen Alliance, as well as the arrest of 39 opposition leaders between May 28 and October 21 – seven of them aspiring to the Presidency.
