Merkel, 67, has summoned the secretary-general of the United Nations Antonio Guterres last week to thank him for the position he offered her in a letter and to tell him that he would not accept her, her office said without giving further details, according to the APE-MPE.
German media reported that Guterres had offered Merkel her place head of a high-level advisory body United Nations Office on Global Public Goods, one of his main reform plans.
Merkel has been out of the political spotlight since handing over the German chancellor to the Social Democrat Olaf Solts.
