North Korea closed the capital due to a “respiratory illness”

The Russian embassy and NK Newsbased in Seoul, North Korea, reported that the Pyongyang authorities ordered a five-day mandatory confinement due to the increase in cases of a so far unidentified respiratory disease.

In the notice, shared by the embassy through its Facebook page, it was indicated that “a special anti-epidemic period has been established” and foreign delegations were asked to keep their employees inside. In addition, the temperature of all residents was requested four times a day and the results communicated to their nearest hospital by telephone.

The notification did not mention that the disease in question was covid-19 or any of its variants known to date, only an “increase in winter cases of recurrent flu and other respiratory diseases” was cited.

On January 24, the website of NK News (North Korean media) reported that Pyongyang residents were stocking up on goods as a precaution against strict lockdown. What is not clear is whether other areas of the country are in the same situation.

It should be remembered that North Korea acknowledged its first outbreak of covid-19 last year, but in August it had declared victory over the virus. However, he never confirmed how many people contracted coronavirus.

Since then, state media have continued to report on sanitary measures to combat respiratory diseases.
