North Korea: Officially announces first coronavirus outbreak in Pyongyang

The first outbreak of the new coronavirus from the pandemic event was officially announced today at North Koreaaccording to state media, which described the development as a “national state of emergency”.

According to the state news agency KCNA, the first and subsequent cases were found to be due to BA.2 sub-variant of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, which is highly contagious, after being located in the capital Pyongyang.

The North Korean leader, o Kim Jong Unwho chaired an emergency meeting of the Politburo of the Korean Workers’ Party, vowed that the crisis would be “overcome” through the implementation of the control and quarantine system at its “maximum” level.

“The aim is to eradicate (the virus) from the root as soon as possible,” Kim said during the PG emergency meeting, always at the KCNA. He assured that thanks to the “strong political conscience of the people we will surely overcome the state of emergency”.
